ILC UK is pleased to announce that our next Future of Ageing Conference will take place on Thursday 29th November 2018.
The annual Future of Ageing conferences have been described by delegates as ‘one of the best conferences I have ever attended’. The conferences assemble experts from the fields of health, housing, finance and business to identify the challenges and opportunities posed by an ageing society.
They expect over 250 attendees to join us at the conference, including policy-makers; business leaders; charity sector experts; public sector decision makers; local authority staff; academics; and senior journalists. Last year we had journalists attending from 8 national (UK) newspapers including the FT, Times, Daily Mail, and The Guardian.

Pioneer Network will be hosting our annual conference, Pioneering a New Culture of Aging, bringing together individuals from across the United States and other countries who care deeply about changing the culture of aging, creating opportunities for communication, networking and learning with and from each other as they share innovative thought and best practices.
They strive to make this event meaningful to people who support person-directed living and culture change for the benefit of elders wherever they may live. They aim to support those who are just starting on the culture change journey to build a sense of home and community for and with elders – as well as those who have been actively engaged in this mission for some time.

The UC Berkeley Aging Research and Technology Innovation Summit, on August 17, will highlight the educational and research mission of the University of California (UC) and its diverse and significant impact on improving the well-being of older adults. In addition to emerging research and technology updates by leading UC researchers, the program will include an overview of student and older adult education at UC Berkeley, poster sessions of student research, technology innovations, and the presentation of the Paola S. Timiras Memorial Award for Aging Research.
The goal of the innovation summit is to foster the cross-pollination of ideas and help forge new collaborations between UC researchers and leaders in industry, government, and the not-for-profit sectors, while exposing students and key stakeholders alike to a vision of healthy aging.
The Summit is hosted by several UC Berkeley aging research and education programs: Center for Research and Education in Aging (CREA), Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and the Banatao Institute (CITRIS), Center for Technology and Aging (CTA), OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), Fung Fellowship for Wellness and Technology Innovations, and the Center on the Economics and Demography of Aging (CEDA).

The major conference theme ‘Agency, Citizenship and the Dynamics of Power’ brings together topics that have traditionally stood at the core of sociological thinking, but that have not been necessarily at the heart of gerontological theory and research. Many authors now point to the contemporary struggles over the representation of older age within and beyond the realm of the social sciences. Later life and older people are represented on one hand as a quiescent minority bearing multiple disadvantages within a social status of limited agency and increasing dependency, experiencing a loss of autonomy and the need to redefine one´s role in the community and society. On the other hand, older people are also seen as a source of new political, economic, and cultural ‘grey’ power, as an influential actor in contemporary societies, shaping the contours of new policies and welfare regimes. These debates reflect the diversity of the experiences of ageing selves and the pluralities of life courses as well as of the institutional, political, and social changes with which the personal and individual experience is inseparably interlinked. These struggles lead also to the reformulation of the concepts of agency, autonomy, or power themselves and to the calling for their even more reflexive application in academic accounts of the human experience in later life.
The organizers welcome individual and team contributions from the sociology of ageing, social gerontology, and related academic fields, as well as submissions for thematic session proposals. We would like to particularly invite papers and sessions that will discuss ageing-related issues within (but not limited to) the following topics:
- Changing welfare and political regimes under which old age is given shape
- Contemporary theories of power and citizenship in later life
- (In)dependency, interdependency, and personhood in older age
- Homes, communities and power in the context of migration
- Structural changes and existential challenges in later life
- Older persons as (political) actors in contemporary societies
- Research methodologies and power relationships within research (in the field)
- Roles of various stakeholders in ageing related agendas and policies as well as in influencing individual ageing conditions
